One of my favorite things of the season...the lights! As I reflected on the words of Jesus, "I am the light of the world..." I started to wonder what else the Bible says about light.
The first thing to come to mind is how God spoke it into existence: "Let there be light."
He led his people with pillar a fire so they could see in the night.
He tells us how to navigate a dark world. More than seeing in the darkness, God's Word lets us see how to get around in life:
I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path.
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:104-105
He says we get to be light, shining for all to see so that God gets the glory.
It was prophesied that Jesus would reveal God as a light. Luke 2:32
He brought light to everyone. John 1:4-5
But, not everyone is happy about it. John 3:20
Jesus boldly declared Who He is. John 8:12 These words would have made even more sense to those listening at that time because of the Festival of Shelters where they observed a lamp lighting ceremony to recall the fire that led them out of Egypt we read about in Exodus 13.
Our transformation should show! John 12:46 reminds us that we are transformed when we're filled with the light of Christ which is a reflection of the glory of God. So we get to be that to others!
Live like it! Ephesians 5:8 It's easy to get distracted and sin is always trying to derail us. But since we know Him we need to live how He wants us to:
Shining brightly. Philippians 2:14-15
Getting rid of hate. 1 John 2:9
Heaven is our goal, our final destination. And even there, Jesus is the light!
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. Revelation 22:5
