It's a peaceful early morning moment. I’m sitting on the couch, two sleeping puppies curled up with me and the glow of the Christmas tree lighting the room. Three weeks ago we brought home 8-week old dachshund littermates. It was three years ago when we got Honey. As her name implies, she was the sweetest puppy! She never bothered the tree or ornaments or anything. Never chewed up shoes or furniture. For the most part she was the perfect puppy.
We can’t say the same for these two so far! We thought it would be great for Honey to have a little sister to train and play with. And when we went to see them we couldn’t decide between the two, so we got them both! For two weeks they were collectively named Puppy or Sisters until we landed on Biscuit and Tater.
Christmas looks different this year, starting with the fence around the tree. And as frustrating as they can be waking us up in the middle of the night and not getting with the housebreaking program, we know that eventually they’ll be cherished companions adding lots of love to our home.
For now, we’re breaking up puppy fights, picking up poop, and trying to make sure Honey still gets enough attention while keeping in mind that this is just like so many other things in life - putting in the time now for rewards that will come later.
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11
Whatever your Christmas looks like this year, I hope you'll take the time to see the Lord in all the celebrations and disciplines.
