Planting God's Word

Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. James 1:21

Today’s verse of hope – and a tv show – reminded me of something big God did in my life.

It’s one of those shows that seemed like everyone was talking about.  An interview with some of the actors made it look fascinating. Then a friend’s post about how creative it is moved me to check it out.

After only a few minutes of the first episode I heard more profanity than I had in quite a while.

Before becoming a Christian, I used plenty of those words on a regular basis. But shortly after I gave my life to Christ, He changed all that.  Even 35 years later, I can still recall the night as if it were last week. It was a home-group Bible study where we were standing in a circle for prayer, inviting the Holy Spirit to speak to us after the lesson.

Suddenly, I got the strangest taste in my mouth! It tasted just like potting soil smelled (easily recognizable because I had recently repotted plants.) As I was beginning to wonder what was going on, I felt the Holy Spirit’s nudge, “You’ve got a dirty mouth.”

I did, indeed. So, I told the Lord I didn’t know any other way to talk, and that if He’d help me, I’d do my best to make that change.

From that night on, apart from maybe 2 or 3 times, I haven’t used foul language unless it was intentional (and that hasn’t happened much either!) I truly count it as a miracle!! If He did it for me, surely, He can do it for you as well.

But when I watch shows or movies or hang around people with colorful language it puts those words in my mind and then I know they’re more apt to come out of my mouth. And I don’t want them in my mind, anyway!!

Lord, help me get rid of all those things that are counter to Your Word and Your will for my life. Thank You for planting Your Word in my heart and for all it continues to do to guide me along right paths.  Amen.
