Waiting At Life’s Traffic Lights

The other day, I was driving home and got stuck at one of those traffic lights. You know the kind—the ones that seem like they last forever and make you wonder if the light is even working. I sat there, watching cars pass by on the cross street, feeling the frustration slowly build. Why is this light taking so long? Why can’t I just move forward already?

It struck me how much this feels like life sometimes. We’ve all had seasons where we’re waiting—waiting for an answer to prayer, waiting for a new job, waiting for clarity about the future. In those moments, it feels like nothing is happening, and we can’t see what’s on the other side of the wait.

But here’s the thing about traffic lights: they do eventually change. That light turned green, and I was able to move forward. And in the same way, God’s timing is always perfect, even when it feels like we’re stuck at a standstill.

Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, “But those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Waiting isn’t wasted. God uses those moments of stillness to strengthen us, prepare us, and guide us toward His plan for our lives.

Think about it: if the light turned green at the wrong time, chaos would ensue. Cars would collide, and the road wouldn’t function the way it’s supposed to. In the same way, when we try to rush ahead of God’s timing, we can miss the beauty of what He’s orchestrating behind the scenes.

Lincoln Brewster’s song “While I Wait” speaks directly to this idea. The chorus says:

“While I wait, I will worship

Lord, I’ll worship Your name

While I wait, I will trust you

Lord, I’ll trust You all the time.”

It’s such a beautiful picture of what waiting can look like. Worship and trust don’t have to stop just because we’re in a season of waiting. In fact, waiting is often where those things grow the deepest.

So, if you’re in one of those “red light” seasons of life, be encouraged. It won’t last forever, and God knows exactly when it’s time to move. In the waiting, He’s working. In the stillness, He’s preparing you for what’s ahead.

Take heart, and remember—you’re not alone at that traffic light. God is with you, and when the time is right, He’ll turn it green. And when that happens, you’ll see how every moment of waiting was worth it.

How do you handle seasons of waiting? Share your thoughts in the comments! We’d love to hear how God is working in your life during those “red light” moments.
