Christmas is upon us, and as I get into the spirit of the season, I’ve been reading several Christmas devotions that talk about the true meaning of this time of year. A thought came to mind: What kind of God does this? As we read the amazing story of God’s love for us through the birth of His only begotten Son in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, we see that Jesus wasn’t born into royalty, even though He was the almighty King. God's Son was born outside, in a humble stable, surrounded by some of the lowest of the low people of that time. He was born with animals around Him and placed in a feeding trough. A typical king would have been born in a palace, wrapped in fine linens like silk, with servants all around and a kingdom waiting for His arrival. So, when I think, What kind of God does this? I’m reminded of a God who has control over the entire world, a God who can do anything He wants, yet chooses for His Son to be born in such an unexpected way.
Our God is loving in a way unlike any love we’ve ever experienced. He is humble, generous, forgiving, and faithful. His Son shows us these same qualities—love, humility, generosity, forgiveness, and faithfulness—when He died on the cross for our sins. What kind of God does this? A God who bleeds and dies for our sins—sins like murder, stealing, lying, and sexual immorality. A perfect God, full of perfect love for us, who wants nothing more than for His creation to love Him in return. Will you love Him the same way?
